How to get into the spirit of winter and say goodbye to the winter blues

It seems like everyone has the winter blues this time of year.  If you are like my many of my friends who are living in cities where they are facing negative temperatures, snow days with kids staying home from school, and that overall coldness you just can't shake, this article is for you.  Here are some of my hacks when it comes to thriving during the winter season.  I will go into depth on each topic in upcoming blog posts but in the meantime here is a quick list for you.  Enjoy!

1) Do you have access to a sauna or steam room?  I try to get in one at least four times per week during the cold winter months.  It does wonders for my mood and my skin.  Maybe try your local gym as an option.

2) Have you heard of a SAD (Seasonal affective disorder) lamp?  My dad taught me about this a while back and now there are so many options on the market.  I bought a mini version of the lamp from Amazon.  I've heard it's best to sit in front of the lamp in the morning when you are waking up.  I bring a drink and some paper to journal or a book to read and sit with it.  It mimics natural sunlight which is good for your brain chemistry if you live in gray cities.

3) Get in a good workout or go for a brisk walk.  I love to sweat and barely go a day without some sort of movement.   Maybe turn on some good music and sweat out the winter blues.

4) Play with your pet.  Take your dog on a walk.

5) Get as much sleep as possible.  Try and sleep eight or more hours a night.  You will feel great!

6) Grab a good meal with friends and have a good laugh.

7) Tell someone you love them- even if it's your pet!  Share the love and it's guaranteed to come back to you.
